It is so very sad to see a senior dog in a shelter. Senior pets are very adoptable: they already are potty-trained, they know their basic commands, they don't chew everything in sight, and they can very easily fit into a family routine.
The Humane Society of the United States celebrates National Shelter Appreciation Week November 1-7, 2009. And dovetailing nicely, November marks Adopt-a-Senior-Pet Month originally sponsored by the ASPCA, but so pertinent to all of our shelters locally and elsewhere.
PetFinder is also celebrating Adopt-a-Senior-Dog Month. They have a blog that shares 5 Happy Tails of senior pet adoptions and a new widget on the website that searches for senior dogs only! How cool is that?
Old Dog Haven is a small nonprofit group using a large network of people. Their goal is to provide a loving, safe home for senior dogs abandoned at the later stage of their lives. Some dogs are taken into homes; those with reasonable life-expectancy are adopted out. The rest are cared for as long as they have good quality of life.
If you have space in your home and in your heart, adopt a senior pet today!
