You can still enjoy hot dogs on your healthy diet.

Summer is here and that means barbecues and picnics. We want to have fun and watch our waistlines. This summer, this column will feature some tasty and diet friendly treats to serve up and enjoy.

An all American favorites for outdoor get togethers is the good old fashioned hot dog. There's so many choices in your grocer's meat section, choosing the healthiest hot dog may seem like a mystery. If you're watching your weight, you may be tempted to pass on the frankfurters all together.

After testing several brands, Hebrew National Reduced Fat Beef Franks passed muster. Unlike most hot dogs, they're relatively high in protein, and an excellent choice for low calorie, low fat, and low carb dieters, as well as resistance trainers who need extra protein.

Hot dogs, overall, are usually mostly fat. Like it or not,  fat alone isn't always diet friendly, and does not build muscle. You want protein in your meat products, not predominantly fat. And it's vital to get some of your fat from sources like Omega 3 rich fats. Hot dogs generally boast little to no Omega 3s. Great sources of Omega 3s are olive oil, flax oil, and fish oil. It's easy to get enough saturated fat, but with Omega 3s it's harder to reach your daily quota.

Hebrew National beef franks are Kosher, (even if you're not Jewish this is still a great choice for quality.) Again, unlike most hot dogs, these dogs are made of premium beef cuts not formed meat. They're delicious, juicy, and only 45 calories a hot dog. With 7 grams of protein, 0 grams carbohydrates, 2 grams fat, you can even eat two without guilt.

Whether you're watching carbohydrates, or going the low fat or low calorie route, these are just the ticket. Enjoy them eaten on 100% whole wheat buns, or pair them with sauer kraut for a low carb meal. Dress them up with your favorite low calorie condiments like mustard, relish, onion, and even chili. You'll feel like you're cheating!
