In February, I bought a BOSU 3D Body Sculpting System. One of the workout DVDs that comes with this workout package is the BOSU Reactive Strength and Power workout. As workouts go it is smoking. If you’re looking for a challenge this is it!
This video is part of the BOSU Pro Series and hosted by Gay Gasper. She’s a fairly smooth host and enjoyable to workout with. Two other exercisers help her demonstrate the three levels of this video – beginner, intermediate, advanced – and they make it look easy.
It’s not.
I’ve been working out for a long time. I’ve tried literally hundreds of exercise videos and dozens of pieces of exercise equipment. This workout system rivals the most demanding workouts available. I’m a big fan and practitioner of the advanced in home boot camp systems Power 90X and Power 90X Plus – reviews coming soon and available now at my blog. The BOSU system rivals many other extreme workouts.
The BOSU dome is lightweight, compact, and totally changes the impact of any movement or exercise performed on it. Push ups, squats, even bicep curls, become more difficult to perform and effectively recruit more muscle mass. Think dynamic, intense, and challenging. Think extreme.
BOSU 3D Body Sculpting System combines a variety of exercises that build muscular strength and endurance. If you seek to enhance agility and challenge your balance and proprioceptive skills all the BOSU workouts included in this system will blow you away.
This particular workout video is approximately 55 minutes and separated into five segments. First there’s a warm up including stretching, then lower body functional exercises. You move on to new variations of traditional upper body exercises including core exercises that also challenge balance. My favorite exercise is done with the BOSU dome upside down. You sit on the flat side with the dome side against the floor and work to maintain your balance while performing core work. A peak segment follows with reactive power moves much like P90X plyometrics. Then there is a cool down that includes stretching.
You’ll need a set of dumbbells. I used my Bowflex SelectTechs which I whole heartedly recommend. Individual exercises include resistance training including push ups, lunges, squats, chest flyes, chest presses, bicep curls, hammer curls, leg lifts, and ab crunches.
Aerobics is also incorporated in this total body workout and includes stepping, marching, and running in place.
The difference with this workout system is the Bosu dome itself. In creating instability in every move by performing exercises on the BOSU this challenges your muscles in ways they cannot be challenged on a flat, stable surface like a floor or regular exercise step.
I’m pretty fit and this was a challenging workout for me. I can’t wait to try Pilates on this thing!
Note that this particular workout video is not for beginners. Always check with your physician before trying any exercise program. I will post workout recommendations for beginners soon.
