The following interview took place with Pauline Rzepecki, of Heartfelt Hypnosis, located at Be Well in downtown Birmingham.

First of all, what is hypnosis? Hypnosis is a state of focused concentration, where the subconscious mind, which holds all of our memories, and is the creative brain, comes to the forefront while the subconscious mind and body are in the background-resting and relaxing. All hypnosis is self hypnosis, I am just the guide. I guide people where they want to be, and guide their subconscious, creative and intelligent mind forward to work out a solution to their problem. The easiest way to describe it in layman terms is that the subconscious mind is driving the car while the conscious mind is resting in the back seat.

Please describe your field of expertise, and explain your personal
mission
. I am a nurse, with a BSN and a MSN.  I have been working in
Obstetrics for the past 25 years. Over 18 years have been at the bedside as
a Labor and Delivery nurse. I am also a HypnoTherapist and a HypnoBirthing
childbirth educator and have been doing this for the past 5 years. I
continue to learn more every year about the power of the mind. My personal
mission is to help women and men become the best that they can be by helping
them heal emotionally, mentally, spiritually and physically.

What lead you to this business? As stated
above, I am an RN.  It was while I was attending a birth that I learned of
HypnoBirthing. The mother did great (the HB method worked better than any
other method that I had ever seen before) and I thought that I could teach
this technique and teach it very well. I became a HypnoTherapist to teach
HypnoBirthing. Once I started teaching HB, I realized I loved the hypnosis
aspect and began seeing private clients as well.

How does holistic health apply to your business and your lifestyle?
Growing up in the medical field, I realized that while traditional medicine
does have a place in our health and well being, that there was something
missing. When I discovered HypnoBirthing and then Hypnosis, I though that it
was the perfect way to link both the traditional medicine with holistic
medicine. Hypnosis can be used instead of or in conjunction with traditional
medicine. Hypnosis is a great way to help the client become more involved
and have a greater sense of control with the care that they receive. It also
helps with achieving a healthy attitude towards themselves, their body, and
their lives. Personally, it has helped me heal and I use it for my own
health and well being as well as my children and husband. Practicing
hypnosis daily has helped me to live healthier and happier.

What makes your business unique and sets you apart from your competition?
I believe that my business is unique because I work hard at helping women
(especially) to live healthier and happier lives. I care deeply for them and
want them to achieve their goals. I believe that having a nursing background
sets me apart from my competition. I bring my knowledge and expertise from
my nursing and hypnosis background to help my clients.

Would your services work for everyone? Yes, any one can be
hypnotized. All it takes is a willingness, imagination and intelligence.

Has the recession impacted your business, and if so, how have you
adapted?
Yes, the recession has impacted my business. I have continued to
advertise in different venues, joined and maintained membership in BNI,
began subbing in another BNI group, and kept a positive attitude.

Is there anything you wish people knew about your business that
they probably don't know?
That hypnosis sessions can be reimbursed by Flex
Benefits programs, that every client leaves with a hypnosis CD that they can
practice self hypnosis every day, and that it only takes 4-6 sessions to
achieve most goals. Some goals, like smoking cessation are done in 1-2
sessions.

What do you like about being part of the wellness center Be Well? The
center has good synergy, the people there are pleasant and welcoming, and
hopefully it will enhance my business.

What is one of your favorite stories about a customer benefitting
from your service?
Many of my clients, who come for Enhancing Fertility,
also come for HypnoBirthing and end up having a wonderful birth, instead of
a medically managed and scary birth.

A woman came in for issues surrounding childhood abuse and her cycle of self
sabotage. After 4 sessions, the anger and depression were gone and the
person realized that she was beginning to make good choices for herself, for
her self preservation, health and well being.
