The Bay Area hasn’t been this fired up about an injury since, well, Jeff Kent tried to disguise an injury that actually happened while riding a motorcycle.

Now it’s Monta Ellis whose injury is being questioned after the Golden State guard reportedly suffered several cuts and abrasions on his leg, along with a torn deltoid ligament – not exactly injuries that are common to pickup basketball games.

And all of this comes on the heels of Ellis signing a new contract worth $11 million in each of the next six seasons – not to mention leading up to a season when the Warriors are really going to need him to carry the load with Baron Davis gone to Los Angeles.

If Ellis injured himself in an activity that’s prohibited in his contract, like Kent was with the San Francisco Giants, Golden State could attempt to void his $66 million contract.

Not that Warriors owner Chris Cohan would try to sue his franchise player.

Bottom line, this isn’t good for a Golden State team that was hoping to crash the playoffs again this season but will now be without its playmaker for at least three months – and that doesn’t take into account any of the delays or drama that could arise from his contract situation.

Less than two months until the NBA season tips off, hoops fans. And by the looks of things, we’re going to have plenty of storylines to talk about this season.
