Shaquille O’Neal has another nickname to consider: The Big Retirement.
O’Neal, one of the most dominant and charismatic players the game has seen, reportedly told an Orlando TV station this week that he plans to retire in 735 days (or after two more seasons).
While Shaq isn’t quite the player he was just a few years ago when he won his last NBA title with the Miami Heat, he is still a force to be reckoned with in the post – especially when it’s time to turn it on in the playoffs.
He averaged only 12.9 points per game in 28 regular-season games with the Suns last season, but the Big Aristotle upped that production to 15.2 points and 9.2 rebounds in the postseason. Problem was the Suns didn’t get very far in the 2008 playoffs, running into a battle-tested San Antonio team that was playing its best basketball of the season.
Shaq has said some crazy things in the past, but this time he seems serious, adding “I’ve always had things to fall back on.”
Let’s just hope those things aren’t free-throw shooting contests, freestyle rap battles or sequels to Kazaam.
Hey Shaq, worse comes to worst, you could always work for the Phoenix Suns Gorilla.
