Good nutrition is a keystone of athletic performance. It's important to begin the day by firing up the metabolic system. It's also important to provide fuel for the daily run or workout. Finally, no one doubts the importance of replacing muscle and liver glycogen following a workout.
There are many nutrition choices out there. Packaged this and shrink-wrapped that; super energy, and herbal concoctions abound. Most of this merchandise is just a modern version of snake oil. Who was it that said, “A fool and his money are soon parted?”
They are not all scams
Sure, there are a lot of great fast foods out there. PowerBars, Clif Bars, and Gatorade are just three good examples. These guys not only supply great nutritional products, but give back to the active community to build their consumer base. Great marketing and a win-win.
Custom make your own power meals
Not long ago I posted an article on how to make your own homemade energy bars and got a lot of good feedback on it. Lots of runners and cyclists and other fitness enthusiasts want to take ownership of their winning fuel.
That prompted me to share my own favorite pre-workout and workout recovery food. This is just a breakfast burrito. The important aspect is what goes into it. Like the homemade energy bar recipe, feel free to customize it.
Kelly's Breakfast Burrito
To start with, use either a multigrain or whole wheat tortilla. This is great for fiber, but really wins points on the glycemic index. Use the large size because a burrito is like a buffet; it only looks like a bit of everything, but there are so many things that pretty soon, it's overflowing onto your shoes.
Next, spoon on a heapin' helping of Kelly's Famous Low Sodium Chunky Salsa. Yes, it's that good. If you can get it, add some barbacoa (cheek-meat for you gringos). Next, be sure to dribble on some grated cheese. All kinds work well, but most folks enjoy one of the Mexican blends. Swiss cheese is tangy but Brie is sophisticated. Choices, choices...
Finally, if there is still any room left, spoon on some scrambled eggs. Bon appetite!
