Runners crossing the starting line of the 2009 Houston Luke's Half Marathon, Kelly SmithThe 16th week of not-so-grueling marathon training has arrived. There's just over 2 months left until the Houston Marathon. The Rock 'n' Roll San Antonio Marathon takes place just next weekend, so good luck to all the participating road warriors!

Congratulations to finishers of the 25K and Rocky Raccoon Ultra

Last weekend saw some fine racing; first the Rocky Raccoon Ultra on Saturday, and then the Houston Classical 25K in Downtown Houston on Sunday. Job well done, everybody!

At this time, it doesn't look like Hurricane Ida will have any appreciable effect on our ongoing marathon training plan. In fact, this week will give us temperatures in the high 70s all week. Not bad for training, but a bit cooler would be welcome.

The long run this week builds up again. From here on out, every other week will build on the distance base. For the tempo run, allow a warm-up and cool-down.

Marathon training plan – week 16
11/09/09 - 11/15/09

  • Monday: Tempo run, 6 miles
  • Tuesday: Easy, 4 miles
  • Wednesday: Hillwork, 5 miles
  • Thursday: Easy, 8 miles
  • Friday: Rest day
  • Saturday: Long run, 14 miles
  • Sunday: cross training (weight training, swimming, cycling, yoga, elliptical machine, etc.)

Total weekly mileage = 37 miles

Using a heart rate monitor is a fine way to get in a performance-enhancing tempo workout. Perceived effort is an acceptable way to go in many cases, but during runs with a strong headwind, it will allow modification of pace so that effort is evenly spread over the entire workout.
