The Greenbelt off Bay Area Blvd. in Clear Lake provides a great running workout. It has several things going for it. First, although it's not a true hill workout, it features a series of dips and climbs parallel to the sidewalk. These inclines are short and at about a 20 degree angle which allows for rolling down one side and powering up the other.
Another benefit is that this route is shaded for the most part, making it nice in the summer or even on a warm October afternoon. See the slide show below for more pictures.
The Greenbelt is actually three separate loops with a picturesque drainage ditch running down the center of two of them and a loop around a community park at the third section. Because of this, it offers an opportunity to fine-tune the length of the run.
For the purpose of writing this article, the run began at the tennis courts at Bay Area Park on Bay Area Blvd. This is a convenient place to park because of the availability of bathrooms and water fountains. It's also a very safe park.
Run out of the park and turn left on Bay Area Blvd. Trot approximately 1.8 miles and turn right on Brook Forest Drive. The sidewalk on the left is preferable because the one on the right is very slanted for the most part.
Continue down Brook Forest for about .4 miles and the entrance to the Brook Forest Community Greenbelt is on the right. The sign claims that the entire route is 3.13 but this may be wrong; it feels a bit shorter.
Consider throwing the Greenbelt in at the end of a long run on the Bay Area loop running route. This will make for about 15.5 miles.
