Oklahoma is currently only one of 14 states that does not have a reported case of swine flue. However, State Department of Health spokeswoman Leslea Bennett-Webb has said that there is little doubt that we will have one before too long.
Looking at the map of reported cases, you can see that Arkansas is the only bordering state to Oklahoma that does not have any reported cases, so it seem inevitable.
From the AP:
Oklahoma doctors are sending samples to state health officials from patients with flu-like symptoms, and the state has sent a handful of those samples with potential for being positive for swine flu to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for further testing.
Bennett-Webb said that over the weekend her department received testing kits for determining whether samples are positive for swine flu, but it will initially rely on the CDC for confirmation of any positive results.
A total of 25 cases of seasonal influenza have been confirmed in Oklahoma this flu season. The cases were reported through an influenza surveillance system composed of doctors and labs and represents a fraction of the total flu cases in the state this season, Bennett-Webb said.
She characterized this flu season as mild.
Let us hope it stays that way.
