Matthew 6:9 Our Father in heaven...13...deliver us from the evil one...
This morning we conclude the short prayers that Jesus taught his disciples to pray.
This prayer is not a prayer for our Father to swat the Devil every time he annoys us. The Greek Lexicon, which is like our dictionary, records for us that the word that is translated deliver can be translated, snatch from danger. The Greek word diabolos, that is translated evil one, can also be translated slanderer. This simple prayer is designed to for us to be able to connect with a power source that will enable us to pull back away from the natural desire we have to do it our way. The opportunities to slip off the path that Jesus is on are always nearby.
Satan does not care if we are terrible sinners, filled with all the corruption and vice that is so much a part of the world we live in. The Devil wants us to be ineffective Christians, filled with self-righteousness and spiritual superiority. It is then that Diabolos the Slanderer gets what he really wants from Christians; which is behavior that discredits Christ and denies that God is the very essence of Holiness and Love
In just a few weeks we will celebrate Christmas. Do you remember what the angel told the shepherds on the night Jesus was born. This is what the shepherds heard, for unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign to you, you will find the baby wrapped in cloth and lying in a manger.
Do you remember what happened next?
The shepherds listened as a choir of angels came and sang excerpts from Handel's Messiah and then the alto section went flat and soon the choir disappeared! The shepherd foreman told the shepherds to lay back down and when the morning shift came on duty, they would go to the Doctor in town and have their eyes and ears checked. Not!!!
The paragraph above is what I call, The Reversed Version, my poetic creation, Sidney, likes to read The Reversed Version. In fact, friends, we all have a copy of The Reversed Version safely stored in the Library of our minds.
What the angel told the shepherds to do was find the child and they left to do just that!
When we pray for God to deliver us from the Evil One, we are seeking to envelop our lives in the teachings of Jesus Christ. He promised his disciples that he would never leave them or forsake them. Within each of them and us as well is the spirit of Jesus; that will in every way help us to resist the temptation to glorify our selves which will cause the Devil to pat us on the back and say, "Well done!"
