Perhaps this is a long shot, but it's one I have to try. As I have been working the film angle in Cleveland, I have only been reminded of how oppressed the film industry, changing markets, and general attitude has been towards independent arts of any type. I've said it before, and here's another reminder....
When technology caught up in publication, allowing vanity press, hardly any author can get an advance from a publisher, leaving paying for publishing or doing online self-publishing. Then, digital technology caught up with musicians and making your own CDs or even tapes originally meant that floods of demos could reach the record labels and they didn't have to send scouts out to the circuits and venues anymore! Now, you have to sell thousands of CDs to to gain the attention of a major label to take you on at even a first level basis. Finally, the film industry has digital technology that allows filmmakers to make a good looking product for very little. Saturation sets in a tad bit, but it's still hard to make a feature film, no matter how you cut it. The industry has now changed, as well, and there are hardly anymore advances for films, and rather....you have to pay to play, as an artist.....all the way around to the end. What are we going to do about it???
Before you read further, maybe you should check out this article on "Starving Artist" paintings to see how artists are being shoved under thumb. I just started laughing at the irony of this one: http://www.drloriv.com/lectures/starvingartists.asp
I have keys to open new doors, but need energy (in the form of strong funding) to do it. Reviews are fine and dandy, and a good start, but it's not nearly enough to do what must be done to bring on the opportunities that everyone says the internet is capable of. Agents and Reps have their place, but not everyone can use them, nor are all trustworthy. I'm in full belief that a proper non-profit organization must be formed where I can take as many elements of the industry by the fringes and pull some opportunity off for artists of many walks to utilize. Let me paint a picture...
Reviews have already done good, by giving positive press within a volatile environment. I'd like to do more and open up new avenues within that area alone to help out, such as distribution that's better than Createspace can do alone, per person. I'd also like to open up a mid-sized studio that offers cheaper services to Ohio filmmakers/musicians, including rental, and any abilities employees and myself could offer within reasonable means. I'd like to link up with other organizations to further empower and reach into the industry, while eventually holding larger corporations liable for some independent contribution, other than just prizes and contests. I'm talking truly liable to maintaining worthy careers of filmmakers, musicians, and other art forms. While these corporations have dominated by even creating "indie" studios of their own, most have gone wayside and never truly represented any of us. They owe the communities they exploit!

An example of damage caused within the industry is how Bluray is a blessing and a curse. Indies have finally gotten DVD to where they can afford to distribute on their own, but everyone is starting to look towards high definition, of course. The entry to Bluray is unfortunately not really much of a distribution option for indies at this moment and pricepoint....so we are "SOL", except for limited DVD & internet downloads. Perhaps a program put through by larger studios could offer a reasonable entry into the Bluray format and they could still profit somehow from it. Talking ideas here isn't enough. I feel compelled to get a non-profit up and running and charge forward. I could dedicate my life to such a cause as all of the mentioned, but need help.
This is the tip of the iceberg and plenty of opportunities could exist with the right help. commercialminded@yahoo.com is my contact, so if anyone interested in further discussion, I'm open to it, but with my structure in place, I'm also all action. The heart's already there! Someone's got to actually get something done! Let slip the dog of war upon these industries, and let's open up lost opportunity with new ones for all! I've already been biting off a little, one review at a time.
Best, Kenny
