This is a side road from reviewing independent genre flicks, which the "Madness" will soon continue, but for now I'm driving home a documentary with a catchy title..."inGREEDients"!
Most of us go through life trusting that powers that be and people that we do business with have our best interests at heart. Sure, we do have a good side to our top-of-the-line predatory nature, but that's reserved for when we aren't talking about making a capitalist profit off our fellow man. The movie "inGREEDients" is a documentary that shows us that we are being poisoned through what we eat to profit others. I will give a lot of detail here, but it pales in comparison to actually watching the movie, really! Having family members with health issues or not, bad habits or not, should be reason enough to check out Sir Rebel Films "inGREEDients".
Okay, you may be wondering what we're talking about here? Is this heading towards topics like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease? Heck yeah! Most of us have been consuming a toxic ingredient for our whole lives that our bodies were not designed to handle naturally, but we are what we eat and serious outcomes, just like in the environment we seem to forget about, are inevitable!
Here's the point: Transfats, or rather "hydrogenated oils", (whether partially or not) are creepers that kill us before our time.
Before you get on your high horse and think things that may be ignorant and "cry wolf", someone once said that there are 3 steps to truth. 1. Ignoring it. 2. Getting angry towards it. 3. Accepting it as if it's always been there. It's pretty safe to assume, after watching this movie, that jumping to step 3 is probably the best thing to do, unless you don't care about your or your family's health. I've witnessed family and extended family go through issues with lungs, heart, and kidneys...all stemming from the basics we are warned about!
David Burton (Director) and J. Thomas Wenzel III (Producer) bring the whole transfat hydrogenated oil thing home, in a clear and concise manner that WILL frighten you! This is done with facts and interviews of REAL famous doctors, scientists, biochemists, politicians, lawyers, and organizations! Our own Cleveland, Ohio City Council Kevin Conwell has said, "We are digging our own graves with our teeth!" His efforts started in the school systems, also creating awareness in the process. While many U.S. cities and other countries have been systematically banning the use of this nasty ingreedient, which started out as the main component of the famous product Crisco, it's still taking a long time and has contributed to damaging our population's health in ways both measurable and still yet to be measured.

The Associate/Co-Producer, Russell Hess brought this independent documentary to my attention. In addition to his own health having been tested by this issue, I'm guessing he did this because Ohio is still saturated like most places with this stuff on our shelves. I'll thank him, the Burtons, and Wenzel here, for you if you don't do it. I just threw out my box of Hot Chocolate mix and Non-Dairy Coffee Creamers, which all have partially hydrogenated oils. I make homemade cafe mochas and now will use cocoa powder and dry powder milk and sugar with my coffee. Even products that claim "zero" transfats are sometimes lying to you.
So...what does this stuff do to us, really? Quick breakdown as I understood it in the video: First, let's understand that this seemingly harmless sounding thing is infact quite harmful. They take vegetable oils of different types and strip it. Then it is heated, adding 3 types of harmful metals to act as catalysts in fusing actual hydrogen together with what's left of the oil. It's a hybrid man made oil made up of a seemingly similar structure to natural oils, however, the movie shows an alarming truth within the molecules in which our bodies did not evolve to properly ingest, especially since it never existed till half a century ago. It's NOT natural and is definitely a toxin to us! You know...skull and crossbones stuff here!
It alters your HDL and LDL cholesterol balance, which they show the effects of in the movie. It also seems to have a swelling effect on your organs and tissue. Our cells are made up, structurally, of fat molecules, which come from natural oils, but in this case...we are replacing it with the synthetically made ones. You don't want to know what that affects. While none of this is overnight, imagine what happens when you don't properly do car maintainence over the years! Your car wears out a lot quicker than designed, right? Also, here's a real clincher on those products that say they are "zero" transfat.....They are allowed to say that if the serving size contains only half of a percent or less of the hydrogenated oils, again partially or not. A biochemist tests a bunch of products out that say zero, showing how much is actually in it...again, viewable in the movie.
I'm not trying to give you too much, and there are so very much more facts, but there's a bit more you should know to help you realize this is an epidemic, not unlike other diseases. Corporations look at this hydrogenated oil as a blessing to preserve shelf-life from cross country delivery to lasting on your shelf, which means profit. Their marketing pushes it down your throat and you buy into the convenience of not having to eat the products you buy right away, unlike perishables that must be eaten quickly. From restaurants, schools, to the hometown grocery stores.....you are surrounded by the stuff. Again, the movie shows examples! Many people you know are getting fatter and fatter, many are diagnosed with diabetes that one day may lead to kidney failure, and heartdisease. All these are on the rise, and all this leads to healthcare and hospital bills, pill/ insulin sales, and kickbacks within the medical industry to other industries, not leaving out politics that are supposed to protect us. Luckily there are still some good politicians out there, looking out for us. Large corporations are not individual and accountable people, they are group entities looking out for their shareholders and projecting us as figures. Their marketing departments are trying to keep their jobs and get promotions. We are that corporate ladder that they step on! It's not unlike any other saturated industry taken over by the corporate phenomenon. Film is a prime example, if not music and literature of big money taking over! There's my rant!
What I liked about this documentary movie is that nobody crams anything down your throat directly, because the subject matter, expert information, and severity of what's going on impacts you directly. Unless you are a dietary purist of sorts, this movie is aimed at protecting you without a doubt! The FDA was confronted, but the filmmakers were denied. While the FDA isn't bad, it isn't equipped to handle such a task at this point, with all the other things it has to do. It's now up to us to read our labels and eat better!
In wrapping this up, the movie was well done, especially at the indie level. It was based out of Florida. The Director, David Burton, is a nurse, a father/ husband, and a filmmaker. When he realized what was happening, he made this movie and journey to protect his family and to drill the point home to us that we are under attack at a "gut" level (my pun intended) by the principals that our country was founded upon...capitalism! We all want to make a buck, but when it comes to our core body of food and health, this chaos must stop, immediately! Clear your kitchen's shelves, watch what fast food you buy, and start eating more fruits and vegetables.
Best eat, Kenny
