In any art form or whenever anybody achieves something that is intended for public consumption, there are those who hate on the end result or the creators themselves.  Today, we are talking about those who actively seek to destroy, slander, or libel against independent film and it's makers.

I had put up a trailer on the internet rss feed through a "trailer website", for my space flick.  When I did this, there were a few good comments, lots of views, and some bad comments.  Funny thing is that the bad comments seem to make it to the comment sections of websites first, as if these people have nothing better to do than attack things.  My question is do these people have lives or are they stuck in depression?  We all have negative things to say about anything, even things we love dearly, but come on here!  Luckily, some of those bad comments and good ones discrediting them lead to an interview by the website's writer.  Sometimes bad is good, right?

Still, this phenomenon is wearing thin and some things need to be addressed, not so much in defense, but for the decency of humanity and it's efforts to grow and work hard towards goals.  Indie film is an uphill climb, if anything.  It should be respected as it has in the past.  These days, with the technological advances that film has brought and cultural expectations, the workload is even harder.  Visual effects, wire work, promotion, and all aspects have been increased.  You have to know tech talk now, what codecs to use in software, how to work ever changing software, how to build a computer, what cameras are doing what and how to use them, and so much more.

Stories have to be more intricate and up to standards that Hollywood has set, to some degree.  People want explosions, fight scenes, entertainment, and more bang for their buck.  The workload gets harder and harder.  Then you have these few haters that have to get their word in before anybody else does.  They surf the web waiting for their next victim to pointlessly attack.  Are they paid off by the large studios to discredit the low end?  If so, I hope they are paid well for their betrayal.  I was always taught that if you do a crime, do it for a real payday, not petty chump change.

In the movie "Fan Boys", the end scene has 2 hater comic book fans with their purchases in hand coming up to the creator and instead of complimenting, they act like little kids that don't know how to express that they have a crush on the comic and it's creator.  They verbally slander and attack the creator till somebody yells at them to just ask for an autograph.  This was funny!

 Fanboys is worth the rental.

In any case, let's stop attacking and start creating something positive like other Cleveland filmmakers, such as Johnny K. Wu, Bill Johns, and more do.  These guys also give back to the filmmaking community, and I suspect they do it without any expectation of a return other than growth of all our art.  Be proud, be positive, be helpful, and don't be haters!

Best, Kenny
