WHY:
Animals suffer endlessly through travel, training and performing. Their lives are filled with mistreatment and neglect. Elephants spend up to 100 consecutive hours chained in cramped circus railroad cars. Handlers abuse elephants with bullhooks and then hide the lacerations with charcoal-colored powder. Read more.

FYI:

  • An ex-Ringling Brothers employee along with several animal advocacy groups filed a lawsuit claiming that the Circus cruelly mistreats endangered Asian elephants in violation of the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The trial concluded on March 18, 2009 but the judge has not yet rendered a decision.
  • After years of denying, Kenneth Feld, CEO of Feld Entertainment (the parent company that owns Ringling Bros.) admitted under oath that ALL of his handlers strike the elephants with bullhooks.
  • The manager of the Center for Elephant Conservation (CEC), the breeding facility in Florida, testified that elephants spend an average of 16 hours chained, while some spend more than 22 hours chained on concrete.

OTHER WAYS TO HELP:

  • Urge your state and/or local legislators to enact laws or ordinances protecting circus animals.
  • If your town is planning to host a circus, suggest an animal-free circus.
  • If a circus with wild animals is scheduled for your area, write letters of protest to the editors of local newspapers. Ask sponsors to withdraw their support. If this doesn't stop the circus, organize a protest and a press conference.
  • Report any animal abuse you see or hear of to the proper authorities—the U.S. Department of Agriculture and your local animal control agency—and follow through with publicity. It is easier to enact a local ordinance or state law after a well-documented incident of abuse has occurred.

Remember, every little thing we do can add up to a lot. Just one hour of your time could convince someone to never again attend, support or sponsor an animal circus.
