The Travolta family will hopefully have more information ,after the autopsy is performed today, about the cause and time of death of their son, Jett. Although there has been much speculation about Jett's medical condition and conflicting statements with police about when Jett was found, it is important to remember that in the case of a sudden and unexpected death, there is much confusion.
It may be months before all the test results are concluded and the family may wish to have an independent autopsy, in addition to one performed by the coroner, which can further delay clarification. It is natural to want answers and attach meaning to a tragedy. Unfortunately this also means that some may want to attach blame as well.
I have read some comments by the public blaming the Travoltas for leaving their son in the care of others. I believe that fear motivates blame. People can find some comfort in the randomness of death if it is "the fault of someone." If they can identify the source, than this means that they can avoid it in their own life.
It can be comforting to know the reason for an untimely death. Investigations of any potential negligence, error in treatment, or medical protocol has been helpful in the past to prevent future deaths. However, it is also important to keep in mind that sorting through all the data can take time, with many missteps and reports along the way. The Travoltas have the added burden of having to go through this in public.
