Although the details of the alleged 25 million dollar extortion plot have not been made public, it is known that paramedic Tarino Lightbourne and recently resigned Bahamian Senate member, Pleasant Bridgewater, have been charged with "conspiracy to extort." Travolta family friend and former Minister of Tourism, Obie Wilchombe, was taken into custody last Friday, but released without any formal charges. There are reports that there is a document that Lightbourne has, that is related to Jett Travolta's death (from his January 2nd seizure) that prosecutors fear may be destroyed if Lightbourne were to make bail.

What is more complicated for celebrity parents and siblings is that their story is public. The Travoltas make their living performing and promoting their work; their privacy in even the most tragic and personal of circumstances is sadly unavoidable. And although fans may be interested and empathic to their situation, this recent extortion allegation may force them to contend with issues that they most likely do not have the energy, or perhaps interest to respond and deal with. Conversely, it could provide a distraction from the uncertainty of grief. However, depending on the details of this alleged crime, it might bring into question the quality of the emergency treatment or care giving their son Jett received adding to their pain and possible confusion.
It is hoped that the Travoltas are getting both the emotional and legal support they need to navigate through these difficult times and that they do not feel obliged to respond to public interest, unless it meets their needs for disclosure and the honoring of their son's memory.
