Our relationship to our work and to our own sense of value and purpose, is more unclear in today's workplace. The headlines are full of major financial institutions declaring bankruptcy or asking for government bailouts. The most recent being, Lehman Brothers and A.I.G.
There is little motivation to "do the right thing" when there are no natural consequences for those in power. Employees often witness executives, who after bringing a company down, receive a hefty severance package. Personal responsibility is not a flag being waved much these days. Finger pointing and hubris appear to be the best responses we have to offer.
What is an employee to do?
