Our relationship to our work and to our own sense of value and purpose, is more unclear in today's workplace. The headlines are full of major financial institutions declaring bankruptcy or asking for government bailouts. The most recent being, Lehman Brothers and A.I.G.
There is little motivation to "do the right thing" when there are no natural consequences for those in power. Employees often witness executives, who after bringing a company down, receive a hefty severance package. Personal responsibility is not a flag being waved much these days. Finger pointing and hubris appear to be the best responses we have to offer.
What is an employee to do?
- Personal integrity is still something an individual can pursue regardless of the current business climate.
- Keeping current with business contacts and other financial opportunities is important during down times.
- Explore additional sources of supplemental income.
Some interesting business sites are: LinkedIn a business networking site, who's tag line is "Relationships Matter;" which at the end of the day, I truly believe is indeed what matters. Pamela Slim's blog "Escape from Cubicle Nation" is a useful source for individuals who may want to leave corporate life to start their own business.
