The City Ordinance, which passed in January of '08, allows restauraunt owners the choice as to whether or not they would like to allow dogs in their outdoor dining areas that are acessible from the street. Restaurant owners apply for a Dog Friendly Area License with the City of Chicago and pay a fee. Some rules/stipulations of this City ordinance are:
  • Dogs may not be served any food except water
  • Employees may have no contact with the dogs
  • Dogs must have a rabies tag & be leashed
  • Dogs must not be in, or travel through any part of the restaurant

Doggie etiquette at outdoor dining cafes is important. Your dog should be well-behaved and leashed.  It is beneficial to have a rock solid down-stay.  If your dog is on a down-stay, he shouldn’t break it, no matter what drops off the table, or no matter what other dogs walk past, for at least an hour. Start practacing your down stays at home, but also outside and around distractions. A good “leave-it” command is also useful in case someone drops a piece of food.

If your dog is dog-aggressive or wary of strangers at all, don’t take him to a busy public area until you have consulted with a trainer and modifyed his behavior.

With some training prep, you and your canine companion can enjoy the beautiful upcoming weather, the lively outdoor cafes, and more.  Here are some dog-friendly restaurants and bars around the city of Chicago.  You may want to call to confirm their outdoor seating before going:
