The Washington State Cougar football team is on the field in Tucson, AZ, going through final preparations to do battle with the No. 18 team in the nation, the University of Arizona Wildcats.
We'll keep you updated on the highlights of the game. Check back for up-to-the-minute comments on the performance of the young Cougs.
11:39am - Team is on the field, warming up and getting prepared to play their best football
11:40am - Coach Wulff tweets "On the field for warm-ups!"
12:25pm - Coach Jim Walden says the keys to this game are the Cougs getting some first downs, rushing for over 150 yards and the defense needs to come up with a couple of turnovers.
12:30pm - WSU captains Andy Mattingly and Dwight Tardy get ready to call the coin toss on Homecoming Day in Tucson.
12:35pm - Cougs call "Tails", win the toss and elect to defer to the second half
14:47 1st Quarter - Arizona Travis Cobb runs the opening kickoff back for a touchdown nearly untouched. WSU 0 - Arizona 7
12:47 1st Quarter - WSU goes three and out to begin the game after Jeff Tuel is sacked on the second play on offense.
7:21 1st Quarter- WSU can't find a way to slow down Nick Foles and the 'Cats. They've scored on their first three possessions WSU 0 - Arizona 21
End of first quarter - Arizona is dominating WSU in every phase of the game. Even when Tuel put a deep ball on the money for Johnny Forzani, it was stripped away for an incomplete pass
WSU 0 - Arizona 24
13:28 2nd Quarter - Offensive line on the left side is getting beaten consistently and BJ Guerra has jumped a couple of times for false starts. Cougs are completely out of sync. Tuel was hit and fumbled on the 14. Arizona scores just a few plays later.
WSU 0 - Arizona 31
3:17 2nd Quarter - WSU finally has an 11 play drive going when Tuel fumbles at the Arizona 14 to turn the ball over. Tuel is injured on the play with a slight knee strain. Arizona takes Foles out of the game, but their offense is still having their way against the Cougar defense.
1:23 2nd Quarter - Arizona drive is stalled by the Cougs. But Jay Matthews is forced to the sidelines by reinjuring his shoulder. Myron Beck is now playing safety.
End of Half - Marshall Lobbestael replaces Tuel with no difference in performance. Three and out. The half ends after a low, driving punt by Reid Forrest.
WSU 0 - Arizona 34
The combination of a very good Arizona team and a very young WSU team is resulting in a significant mismatch. Biggest difference in this game is the size and speed of the OL and DL of the 'Cats. Carl Winson had some effective runs while Dwight Tardy added a nice dash up the middle of the field. Though the Cougs showed some signs of being able to move the ball on the ground, that probably isn't going to lead a second half comeback of mammoth proportions required.
Nick Foles has a typical first half for him, connecting on 71% of his passes averaging 8.6 yards a completion. The Wildcats rushed for 118 yards, averaging a little over 6 yards a carry.
A key to extending the separation on the scoreboard were the two fumbles forced and recovered by Arizona.
Jeff Tuel will not play in the second half and Kyle McCartney left the game with a broken leg that will end his season.
Second half yet to come...
13:27 3rd Quarter - WSU goes three and out. Forrest out punts his coverage and William Wright runs it back 86 yards for a touchdown. The second special team miscue leading to a Wildcat touchdown.
WSU 0 - Arizona 41
7:05 3rd Quarter - The players and coaches haven't caved in. With Foles back in the game at quarterback, the defense stops a drive without giving up a score by good coverage and a decent rush on a 4-2 from the WSU 29. On the ensuing possesion from the WSU 29, Lobbestael is unable to get a first down and Forrest punts once again. The effort is still there, but the results aren't.
END OF THIRD QUARTER
With Arizona airing out their playbook, the WSU defense is able to hold them without giving up points on the final two 'Cats possesions. Arizona continues to use their superior team speed on defense to thwart any offensive momentum by Washington State.
7:05 3rd Quarter - Arizona holds the ball for nearly eight minutes of the final quarter, completing an impressive drive with a touchdown plunge.
WSU 0 - Arizona 48
6:28 3rd Quarter - Cougs get on the scoreboard on a highlight reel, one-handed catch by Karstetter who goes 64-yards for his sixth touchdown of the season.
WSU 7 - Arizona 48
Arizona runs out the final six plus minutes of the game by kneeling after reaching the WSU 9.
