A group of 13 students from Mills High School are planning to participate in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life from Saturday, October 3 to Sunday, Ocotber 4.. The event, at Burlingame High School, will mark their second year as participants and their first official year as "VOW"-Visions of the World, started by high school senior Heather Lee.
Team member, Elena Harada, remembered a time when her dad Toshiaki was diagnosed with colon cancer. After undergoing surgery and treatment, her dad has been cancer free for five years.
"When I told my dad that I was going to walk in the Relay for Life, he thought it would be perfect. It definitely was a big part of my decision to participate," Harada explained.
About the Relay, Harada said, "Not only does it help those in the fight against cancer, it can be a fun 24 hours. Each team thinks of games to play during the day and there are bands and karaoke. At night there are a lot of movies and it makes the time go by quickly."
The Luminaria ceremony, known as one of the most inspirational moments at the event also takes place at night. As these special lanterns help to light the path for walkers during the evening, both survivors and those to be remembered are recognized. The luminarias symbolize everyone who has been affected by cancer, including family and friends who continue the fight in honor of their loved ones.
Families with small children can still take part in the walk, showing up for a shift during the day to show their support.
