Sorry for the rather sensationalistic headline, but in light of both of their bouts this month Fedor Emlianenko and Manny Pacquiao in theory are facing off against each other.

They are not battling each other in a cage or a ring though; they are battling each other in the ratings, buy rates, national exposure, and for their respective sports pound for pound rankings.

This month may be historic in the fact that it is showcasing two fighters who are widely considered the pound for pound kings in the sport of which they compete in, which subsequently is boxing and mixed martial arts.

You have Fedor Emelianenko taking on Brett Rogers tonight live on CBS under the Strikeforce banner in quite possibly the biggest free card in MMA history, and then you have Manny Pacquiao taking on the battle tested Miguel Cotto in the biggest fight of his illustrious career.

Fedor Emelianenko who is the closest thing to inhuman you can get in a fighter, is surprisingly considered an underdog by many even though the man has yet to lose a fight (legitimately with no controversy involved). This has not been the first time Fedor has been second guessed, undersized, and expected to lose (probably will not be the last either), the only universal truth with Fedor is that he is enigmatic and you can never count him out or route against him.

As for Manny Pacquiao, he has single handedly resurrected boxing and kept it afloat in a time that has been dominated by the mixed martial arts movement in the United States. Like Fedor, Pacquiao is expected to lose to a much bigger and stronger adversary in Miguel Cotto. As David taught us in the battle with Goliath, the bigger they are the harder they fall, and Pacquiao has been known to do the unexpected when he fights.

As we can clearly see both Fedor and Pacquiao are the underdogs, are facing much bigger and stronger opponents, and are both jeopardizing their pound for pound rankings and legacies as a whole with each of their respective fights.

So who benefits more in this battle for combat sport dominance between these two this month? I know this will say blasphemous among the MMA community, but I would have to say Manny Pacquiao. The reason being is because Pacquiao, is testing himself in this fight and is fighting an opponent with a little more name recognition and reputation than Fedor is. If Pacquiao wins his fight then he just further cements his legacy as the best fighter of this decade, and if he loses then there are still plenty of top fights for him out there in boxing regardless the fact.

Though Fedor is fighting a very tough and formidable opponent in Brett Rogers, Rogers is not a household name yet and it is seemingly a lose-lose fight for Fedor. If he ends up losing this fight, then it will definitely tarnish his legacy and will damage the stigma that is known as Fedor. If he wins then it just proves Dana White’s notion “that he is not fighting top level guys like Anderson Silva or Georges St. Pierre are, and is why he is not to be considered as pound for pound the best in the world.”

All in all in a battle between Manny Pacquiao and Fedor Emelianenko (among the top pound for pound kings) the undeniable winner is…… the fans of course. We get to see both of these warriors in action in two separate fights that will either make or break there careers, so you tell me who the winner or loser is in that equation?
