WEC 41 produced plenty of exciting moments, but perhaps none quite as shocking as featherweight Jose Aldo’s sudden and gruesome TKO victory over fellow contender Cub Swanson.

The fight seemed to be designed to produce the next challenger to the WEC’s Featherweight title. Nobody could have predicted that the result of the match would have been so dramatic and decided so swiftly.

After touching gloves, the fighters circled and the end was already near. Jose Aldo charged forward, and connected with a flying knee that left his opponent face first on the mat with a grisly gash above his left eye.

The ref rushed in to save Swanson from further damage at the eight second mark of the very first round. Nobody complained about the stoppage. The picture to the right shows why.

So what’s the next step for Brazilian featherweight Jose Aldo? It appears nearly certain that he will get the next shot at WEC Featherweight champion Mike Brown, who defeated former WEC Featherweight champion Urijah Faber later Sunday evening by unanimous decision.
