When Pat Barry defeated Antoni Hardonk by TKO midway through the second round at UFC 104, it was the beginning of a story that sounds nearly too unbelievable to be true.
In his own words, Barry tells about having no cash, eating rice and beans in the days leading up to his match against Hardonk, and facing eviction if the bout had been cancelled for any reason.
It has become customary for UFC President Dana White to announce the winners of "Fight Night" bonuses at the post-fight press conference. The awards are given for "Fight of the Night" (both fighters are awarded), "Submission of the Night", and "Knockout of the Night".
Pat Barry was awarded both "Fight of the Night" and "Knockout of the Night". The bonus amounts vary by event, and at UFC 104 the bonuses were for $60,000 each. As a result, Barry was awarded an additional $120,000 in addition to his contracted compensation for the match.
