California has only a half dozen to chose from. Florida has more than 100 with several new ones proposed this year. But no save-the-whale, palm-tree framed, or UCLA-lovin' special interest license plates have caused as much stir as the ones being proposed in Florida.
So, maybe it's a matter of too many choices, but Florida Gov. Charlie Crist says he would approve license plates with the image of a cross and an image of Jesus if the proposal made by the senate last Friday makes it to his desk.
Some are calling it a license plate debate of "biblical proportions."
One of the two proposed plates shows a cross and the words "I Believe". A similar plate is the subject of a lawsuit in South Carolina.
Florida's American Civil Liberties Union says both plates violate the separation of church and state. Supporters say it is a free speech issue.
"If people don't want one they don't have to buy one," Governor Crist said.
He suggests that the plates would be similar to the national motto "In God We Trust" on U.S. currency.
Meanwhile, in California, a choice between supporting the Arts Council or the Coastal Commission might be an easier choice when buying license plates...hmmm, let's see....a whale tail or palm trees?
