Fighting for religious freedom in today's culture should not detract from the Christian community's call to serve God and others, said Focus on the Family President Jim Daly at a fund raiser for Advocates For Faith and Freedom recently.
“God working through us can change culture. It doesn't have to be hostile as we are fighting in the public squares,” Daly said. “We can't turn back from doing good while we are battling. That's one of the biggest concerns that I have right now. As we are in the battle, we can begin to lose our first call, which is the commission.”
Daly was the keynote speaker for the religious freedom advocates group's benefit dinner at the Nixon Library in Yorba Linda, Calif. last month attended by more than 400 supporters. Daly stepped into the Focus on the Family leadership position in 2005 when the group's founder, Dr. James Dobson, began handing over his responsibilities as chairman. Dobson continues to represent the Colorado-based group with his radio show, newsletter, and speaking engagements.
Daly commended the Advocates For Faith and Freedom legal team, including board member Robert Tyler, for their work in defending the rights of those attacked for their beliefs. He said that those opposed to “what we believe” have been having substantial success over the last 30 to 40 years.
“What Bob and his team are doing is the most effective thing we can do,” Daly said. “We could be on CNN screaming at each other, but in the courts, that's where we win or lose.”
Daly concluded his message by calling on Christians to act.
“The scripture says very clearly 'Do these good works so that those who see them will honor your Father in heaven.' That's an important command that God has given us.
“So, as we are fighting in the public square, as we are defending those things that we believe, we also have to be about doing the right thing. We have to be active in the culture as well as the Christian community – fighting on the front line – fighting at the legislative level, but also doing the work of the church.”
