Training camp is only a month away and the stories are already circulating regarding Mark Sanchez and his desire to become the starting quarterback for the New York Jets. While the Jets have stated that it will be an open competition between Sanchez and Kellen Clemens, it appears that the job will be the rookie quarterbacks to lose. So assuming that Mark does stake claim to the starting quarterback position, what level of performance should be expected from the young quarterback out of USC? Should Sanchez be expected to play like last year’s rookie standouts Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco? Or should Jets fans be prepared to see their new franchise quarterback struggle while he learns the ropes of the NFL?
The answer to this question is probably somewhere in the middle. Mark Sanchez is walking into a conducive situation where the team is built to win now. Gang Green has a veteran offensive line in place along with a strong running game, which takes a lot of pressure off of the quarterback. In theory Sanchez will only be asked to manage the game and will not be required to air it out every game in order for the Jets to win. Add in the Jets top-ranked defense and there could be a formula for success. On the flip side Mark Sanchez only started 16 games while at USC, so in terms of development there will be growing pains while he learns the nuances of the NFL. With the Jets facing challenging defenses in New England, Tennessee and Miami early on in the season those struggles could be evident in the first few weeks of the season.
It will be very interesting to see how this all plays out, especially with the Jets’ passionate, championship starved fan base. The fans have clamored for their own franchise quarterback but will they be willing to endure the highs and lows of a rookie quarterback while he earns his stripes? Do the fans have it in them to continue to support a new quarterback even if his play is costing them in the wins and loss department? Only time will tell but hopefully the Gang Green faithful remembers that the majority of NFL quarterbacks, including Peyton Manning, Donovan McNabb and Ben Roethlisberger, struggled in year one. As a long time suffering Jets fan, I am far from patient but in this case there is no other choice.
