Good teams find a way to win, the New York Jets find ways to lose. The New York Jets lost to the Miami Dolphins 30-25 on Sunday in a game that they statistically dominated. Gang Green has now lost three of their last four games and are on the fast track to another mediocre season.
Offense
The New York Jets racked up 378 yards of offense, effectively moving the ball on the ground and through the air. Running back Thomas Jones once again ran for over 100 yards, and quarterback Mark Sanchez managed the game well without turning over the ball. The issues on offense come with the play calling of offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer. When the Jets get in a good rhythm running the ball, Schottenheimer starts calling pass plays. When the Jets start making plays in the passing game, Brian starts calling run plays. While it is good to keep defenses off balance, it is essential to establish some type of rhythm on offense. Keep running the plays that work until the defense can stop them.
In addition to the questionable play calling, there are formations being set up that are mind boggling to say the least. Several times on Sunday the Jets lined up in a run formation with no receivers on the field. While this formation is effective in short yardage and goal line situations, it does not work on other areas of the field. Also the Jets seemed to have forgotten how to use screen plays and quick slant patterns. It seems like every passing play requires Mark Sanchez to decipher a defense and push the ball down the field. Why not make things easier for the young quarterback?
Defense/Special teams
The Jets played an excellent game on the defensive side of the ball tallying up 6 sacks and completely shutting down the Miami offense. Gang Green held the Dolphins to 104 yards of total offense and 9 points.
The unit that lost the game for the New York Jets was the special teams group, who gave up two kickoff returns for touchdowns in the third quarter of the game. Miami’s Ted Ginn Jr. returned two kickoffs, one for 100 yards, the second for 101 yards, that basically ended any hope the Jets had of winning the game. It was shocking to see this type of performance, as the Jets are known to have one of the better special team units in the NFL.
Overall
This is another tough loss for Gang Green, one that is even hard to write about. How do you hold a team to 104 yards of offense and lose? When your team is having a hard time stopping a kick returner, why do you continue to kick to him? And why in the world would you start going for a two- point conversion in the 3rd quarter? You never chase points, which in the end hurt the Jets. There is a fine line between a rookie head coach making mistakes and a head coach that does not have what it takes to manage and win games. Rex Ryan is starting to walk a fine line when it comes to his tactical decisions. There is a bright spot Jets fans, Gang Green has a bye next week.
