Ryan Moore's third place finish at the WGC HSBC Champions in Shanghai - his first appearance at a WGC event - could well turn out every bit as significant as his win at the Wyndham Championship in August.
Moore, who signed a club deal with Scratch Golf last week, certainly got a monkey off his back at Sedgefield CC two and a half months ago when he won his first event after four runners-up finishes in nearly five years on the PGA Tour. But with all due respect to those Moore beat in North Carolina - Kevin Stadler and Jason Bohn at the third extra hole - they did not create quite the same level of attention and excitement as those with whom he dueled in China this week.
Phil Mickelson won the tournament with a 17-under-par total of 271. Ernie Els came surging through the pack in the final round with a 63 to finish a shot back. Tiger Woods, Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy were also in the mix, and Geoff Ogilvy, Anthony Kim, Retief Goosen, Martin Kaymer, Alvaro Quiros and Nick Watney also played their part in making it an incredibly exciting final day.
In short, there was plenty of opportunity for Moore to get lost in a haze of also-rans. But the 26-year-old from Puyallup, now resident in Scottsdale, shot a fine 68 in round four to wind up in third place, earn over $430,000 and move into the top 50 in the world rankings.
Playing so well in such esteemed company and at so prestigious a tournament will do Moore's career no harm whatsoever.
