Texans head coach Gary Kubiak met with members of the media Monday and answered questions about the humiliating opening week loss to the Jets.

A transcription of Kubiak's comments is available for reading on houstontexans.com.

A few selected quotes and my two cents:

In response to a question about what the Texans have to do to beat teams that are tougher physically, Kubiak said,

"I thought we played hard defensively. I thought we played real hard. We gave up a lot of yardage, but a lot of that fault lies on the other side of the ball. We didn't help them at all."

My thoughts:  "We?"  I thought Kyle Shanahan was the coordinator.  Yeah, I know it's Kubiak's offense but comments like this stoke the fire about Kubiak not being able to assume the role of a head coach, i.e.,  a leader, delegator and motivator.  Do the Texans really have a head coach or do they have a defensive coordinator and an offensive coordinator team, with one of the offensive coordinators having a bigger office and the final vote?

When asked about developing a winning mentality, Kubiak said:

"that's confidence ... in this league, you are going to be, hopefully, in three-point and seven-point games every week. That's this league. Are you mentally and physically tough enough to hang in there for four quarters and make the play? That's the difference."

My thoughts:  While the thought of being 'in' every game every week is intriguing, I've never understood the philosophy of hoping to be in close games every week.  Do you think that's what was going on in Rex Ryan's head when he deferred after winning the coin toss on Sunday?  No.  He was saying something like "I dare you to try to move the ball on us," or in football vernacular "we're here to kick your ass."   It's a different type of confidence that Kubiak speaks of and something his guys are still searching for after 3+ seasons.

When asked about what surprised him when watching the game on (recording), Kubiak said:

"The biggest thing that surprised me was how poor we played on offense.... When I go back and look at it, I don't feel fair about what we're asking them to do and the position that we had them in. ... I look at it, and some of the things that we were asking them to do, some of the confusion we had on the field, and I'm just very disappointed on my part."

Kubiak used the word "confusion" several times again when asked if he is seeing the kind of toughness from the offensive linemen that he wants:

"I don't see anybody not playing hard," Kubiak said, "but I see some confusion that we should not have. Those five guys have played more together than anybody on our team. To me, when there is confusion going on with those guys, then to me that's telling you something as a coach. It's telling you that you're doing something wrong. So we've got to take our look at ourselves as coaches and make sure we don't have these players confused. I'm seeing some mistakes from those guys that I haven't seen in the past."

My thoughts:  I'm confused.  What is the cause of this mysterious confusion?  Is it the result of them trying to do things schematically that they didn't do last season?  Were you compensating to try and protect a gimpy quarterback?  I wish someone would have asked.

While it's honorable that Kubiak accepts responsibility for the poor showing on Sunday, his mea culpas are getting old.  I know there's not much else he can say, but stepping up to the podium as often as he does (going back to past seasons) with the same old 'it's on me' stuff has jumped the shark as they say.

Show of hands:  who really wants to continue to hear these borderline depressing, 'woe is us' confessions about how disappointed the head coach is with himself for not doing his job?  I thought so.

The Texans are in dire need of a confidence boost, and it looks like it needs to start with the head coach.
