Forgive me if this is old news because it came down during my self imposed internet blackout (vacation) last week, but just in case you haven't heard, thebiglead.com reported that CBS Sports #1 football broadcast crew of Jim Nantz and Phil Simms will call the Texans - Jets season opener.
Attached to the end of an E!-like gossip piece about Mark Sanchez and some hockey player sharing a girlfriend is this tidbit:
"Oh, and the Sanchez news never stops: Last week in a radio interview, Jim Nantz of CBS talked about where he and Phil Simms might be for their season opener, and the answer was Houston. The Jets open at the Texans, and Nantz seemed certain that’s where he was headed. His reasons were three-fold: Two big TV markets, the 1st career start for Sanchez (has anyone informed Kellen Clemens?), and the Texans are on the rise (fortified defense + healthy QB = playoffs?)."
I can't guarantee the accuracy of the report but it makes sense when you look at the rest of the Week One schedule.
NBC has the league opener on Thursday, September 10 when the Titans visit Heinz Field in a rematch of Terrible Towel Gate.
NBC also has the Sunday night game when we will watch Jay Cutler make his Bears debut at Lambeau.
ESPN has the Monday Nighter between AFC East rivals Buffalo at New England.
That leaves four early games as the competition with the Texans - Jets. Fox has the doubleheader - meaning they have all the late games on Sunday afternoon.
The Texans-Jets is guaranteed a huge audience considering the markets, the quality of competition and the Joe Willie II Sanchez - Ryan hype machine. The Texans are 12-4 at Reliant over the past two years and the high expectation Jets are coming off a 'disappointing' 9-7 record after an 8-3 start last year.
The other four early CBS games are:
Miami @ Atlanta is a big regional matchup of two surprising 11-5 playoff teams from last year. Jacksonville @ Indy will garner interest because it will give the country its first look at the Tony Dungy-less Colts. The other two games fall into the Ian Eagle category.
So get ready Texans fans. The Texans could go nationwide in Week 1. That would add even more excitement to the start of the new season.
Let's just hope Gary Kubiak and Frank Bush are ready for the challenge, especially against the Jets defense.
It may be a blessing that we're catching Rex's boys early because the last time I saw his defense perform at Reliant, it was pretty ugly and humiliating for the home team.
Did you know: The Texans are 0-3 all time against the Jets and have been outscored 74-32 in those games?
