Texans All Access is all right
Thousands of Texans fans showed up at Reliant Stadium tonight for a taste of football in May as the Texans hosted their fourth annual All Access event.
In terms of Texans off-season fan events, nothing beats the Draft Luncheon, (is there going to be one this year?) but "All Access" runs a close second.
One good thing about All Access is that it’s free. Well, it’s free if you’re a season ticket holder or know someone who is.
Nearly all of the Texans players participate in the event and fans get access to places that only players, Texans employees, media and official visitors get to see during the other 364 days of the year.
Another good thing about this event is that you run into football friends that you haven't seen since last season and it's fun to catch up on news and share thoughts about the new season.
The stadium floor was jammed with Texans fans getting autographs of their favorite players. Those who aren’t into autographs (like me) had the luxury of walking up to the side of the tables to take a quick photo of guys like Matt Schaub, Brian Cushing, Antonio Smith and many others who were signing for excited fans.
Fans enjoyed self guided tours through the team cafeteria, the team lounge, training room, locker room and weight room.
A short walk up to the 100 Level and fans were rewarded with several more Texans players stationed at autograph stations around the concourse.
We stopped at almost every table and the Texans players really seemed to be enjoying the interaction with the fans.
Texans coaches, including Joe Marciano, Frank Bush, and Kyle Shanahan conducted 'chalk talks' with fans in the Cuervo Cantina in the south end zone. Adam Wexler of SportsRadio610 was broadcasting live from the east concourse.
The Texans 'Ambassadors' were also there. I saw Bubba McDowell, Kenny Burrough and Vernon Perry signing at a table in the south endzone.
There was a 20 foot square section of the field (complete with the Texans logo) set up at mid-field such that fans could see how the removable turf - tray system worked at the stadium. Other than that, it was concrete floor.
I even got to meet legendary sports talk radio caller "Larry 'n Stafford," who is a great fan of the boys down on Kirby.
Topping off the Texans All Access event was an appearance on stage by Texans GM Rick Smith and several Texans players.
Smith introduced several players including Mario Williams, Steve Slaton, Chester Pitts, Matt Schaub, Andre Johnson and Brian Cushing.
Pitts, who stole the microphone from Smith (not really), Schaub, Johnson and Cushing each said a few words to excited fans.
Schaub remarked on how Texans fans were "out in such force" in late May. Cushing said he can't wait to play the Jets.
And so it goes. All Access was a huge success and another great fan event hosted by the Texans.
Only two months to training camp. Can you feel it?
