No offense to Patrick Ramsey but I'm kind of excited about the Texans decision to sign Dan Orlovsky as the Sage Rosenfels replacement unit.
To clarify, I'm about as excited as you can get about the signing of a backup quarterback.
But given recent history, Texans fans understand the importance of having a capable backup quarterback. It's not like we have an iron man out there as our starter.
Orlovsky is keenly aware of his chances for playing time with the Texans. He spoke about it during a media event on Sunday.
“There’s a lot of things that play into the decision," Orlovsky said. "Obviously, seeing the history that Sage ... had an opportunity to play weighs into it, but it’s not one of those things where it was the deciding factor. Matt, I hope he plays 16 games next year and is healthy for all of them and into the playoffs, but I will be prepared and I will be ready to play if needed and called upon. So that played a part in it, sure, but it was not a deciding factor.”

I like the move because Orlovsky is big (6-5, 230), young (25), smart (he said he's not stupid) and has very low mileage. He hasn't been traumatized to the point of no return, although last season's 0-16 expereince was probably about as frustrating as getting sacked 76 times. He's eager to learn and is looking forward to getting coached up by Gary Kubiak and his staff. Plus, he can't be any worse than Sage was last year, right?
Orlovsky has had four offensive coordinators in four years and the Kubiak/Shanahan team may be just what the doctor ordered to help advance his career after going through four disastrous seasons at Detroit.
I’m really hungry to get coached, to get pushed and to see where I can get to. Coach Kubiak carries a reputation with quarterbacks...
- Dan O
If nothing else, Orlovsky is special because he will be the first Texans player to wear #6. [edit: read HuskyV's comment below]
There are only five jersey numbers that have never been worn by a Texans player and #6 is one of them. Can you guess the other four?
[I'm talking about the official roster during the regular season - not during camp and preseason when there aren't enough numbers to go around]
And a friendly reminder to some of you who were at the Miami game last season. If Matt goes three-and-out on his first drive, or (gasp) throws an interception in the home opener this season, that doesn't mean it's time to break out the "we want Dan O" chants, okay?
