Bruce Matthews is back where he belongs; working for Houston's NFL team

As expected, the Texans didn't make any big splashes in free agency on the first day of the new NFL business year.

Those moments are typically reserved for that Jerry Jones wannabe in D.C. who has won a grand total of one playoff game in the last nine years - kind of like the real Jerry.

But something happened today that made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside, giving me a sense of normalcy I haven't felt in a while.

Bruce Matthews is once again employed by Houston's NFL team.

Yeah, he's just going to be an 'offensive assistant' - a grunt of sorts - but that's Bruce, a blue collar offensive lineman forever.

This is like one of those stories where you lose your dog while on vacation 1000 miles away, only to have him show up on your doorstep several years later wanting to play fetch.   It's like having stolen jewelry returned to you after being robbed at gunpoint more than a decade ago.

Yes, Bruce is back where he belongs.

I got a chuckle out of a comment at the end of a Tennessee newspaper report where a Titans fan said something to the effect that "it will be odd seeing him on the opposite sideline."

Um... not as odd as seeing one of our guys having to wear those butt ugly uniforms and the flaming thumbtack for the last five years of his nearly two-decade playing career.

Bruce has been a fixture in this community since 1983 and it's great to have him back where he belongs; working for Houston's NFL team.

In other news:

  • The Texans are reportedly considering signing Patrick Ramsey to fill the vacant backup QB slot.  How exciting.  Has he done anything since Washington?  Did he do anything while at Washington?  Didn't he end up on IR last year because of a bad elbow or something?  Yeah, I know, he knows the offense ... blah blah blah.
  • In a bit of a surprise, RFA David Anderson received an offer sheet from the Broncos which the Texans will have seven days to meet or else they will lose him for only a 7th round pick.  I expect the Texans to counter since they already tendered him at $1 million and the Broncos offer was three-years, $4.5 million with a $1 million signing bonus.  The Texans signed Joel Dreessen to a new contract similar to the Broncos offer to Anderson and I'd say he's worth that amount.
  • The biggest news is that the Texans will host Cardinals unrestricted free agent Antonio Smith on Saturday.  Smith would be a good fit at the left defensive end position recently vacated by the release of Anthony Weaver - as long as the money is right,   With the Texans unwilling to commit long term dollars to Dunta Robinson and putting DeMeco Ryans' contract negotiations on hold, it may not go over well if Rick Smith brings in a middling free agent and makes him the second highest paid player on the defense.  But that's the business.  Kubiak and Co. would then have the young bookend to Mario Williams that they desire, but at what price?
