Seems like it was just yesterday that we were talking about Sage to the Vikings trade rumors. Has it been a year already? My, how time flies.
Actually, it was only ten days ago that I brought up the Sage trade talk again after seeing a brief segment on NFL Network about the Jets QB situation
There's no sense in repeating what was written in that article other than a 4th rounder seems like adequate compensation for Sage all things considered.
The big question now, if the trade really goes down, is who's Matt Schaub's backup?
Alex Brink is the only other QB on the Texans roster and I doubt if he's ready to assume the #2 role.
Of course none of us spent any time at the practice facility so we don't really know to what degree Brink has improved since we last saw him on the field in August.
The Texans are assuming a fair amount of risk with this move, so expect them to sign a veteran free agent QB with starting experience to provide insurance behind Schaub, who has missed 10+ games in two seasons because of injuries.
The pickin's are slim. Unless you get excited over names like Ryan Fitzpatrick, Dan Orlovsky and Kyle Boller.
Coach Kubiak likes his QBs so I wouldn't put it past the Texans to target a development QB late in the draft again this season.
Another thing to remember is that it's Matt Schaub's option year and if he misses another 5-6 games this year, the Texans would be hard pressed to justify giving him that $10 million option bonus to activate the final three years of his contract.
To say that keeping Matt Schaub healthy is one of the main keys to a successful Texans 2009 season is the understatement of the year. But that's no different from most teams that have an established #1 QB.
