The Texans made a few roster transactions yesterday, placing Owen Daniels on season ending injured reserve and promoting defensive end Jesse Nading from the practice squad to the 53 man roster.
You may be wondering why the Texans needed yet another defensive end on the roster, but Texans head coach Gary Kubiak says it's all about special teams.
"We activated ...Nading ...because what Jesse can do is basically replace Joel (Dreessen) on special teams," said Kubiak during a media session after practice Wednesday. "Joel not only snaps for us, he played on everything. So we need that body type, so that's where Jesse comes in."
Kubiak wants to reduce Dreessen's workload because he will be taking over the #1 tight end position replacing Daniels.
That will make three Colorado State Rams on the 53 man roster (Dreessen, Nading and David Anderson). Is the locker room big enough for these former roomates? But I think they were all up at the same time last season too, so this isn't new I guess.
With the addition of Nading, the Texans are now carrying 11 defensive linemen on the roster including six defensive ends (Mario Williams, Antonio Smith, Tim Bulman, Connor Barwin, Tim Jamison and Nading).
Jamison was inactive last week at Buffalo, as was defensive tackle Frank Okam.
The Texans also need to replace James Casey on special teams this week but Kubiak was less sure about who would fill in for him. "Nick (Ferguson) could come up this week," said Kubiak, "that's a tough decision for us, and that one will probably go all the way up to Sunday."
Practice squad adds
The Texans signed Dezmond Sherrod and Marcus Freeman to the eight man practice squad yesterday.
Sherrod, a tight end who spent the past year on the Steelers practice squad was an undrafted rookie out of Mississippi State in 2008. He graduated from college with an MBA so he's on solid ground if the NFL doesn't work out for him.
Freeman was a 5th round draft pick by the Bears in 2009 and was most recently a member of the Bills practice squad.
