Nick Scurfield of houstontexans.com is reporting that the Texans have waived offensive lineman Brandon Frye.
Frye's release signals that Ephraim Salaam and Rashad Butler are both healthy and ready to man the backup tackle positions behind starters Eric Winston and Frye's college teammate, rookie 1st round draft pick Duane Brown.
Frye was expected to provide depth at tackle after being selected in the 5th round last year but he was slowed by an injury or two and spent the first half of the season on the practice squad. He was promoted to the 53 man roster during the second half of the 2007 season but saw no game action.
During this past training camp and preseason, Frye was moved around and saw time at guard but with Chris White and Kasey Studdard backing up starters Chester Pitts and Mike Brisiel, it seems that Frye was caught up in a numbers game.
Or maybe it was one of those Alex Gibbs things. That, we may never know.
There's always the possibility that Frye could be re-signed to the practice squad if he clears waivers since he has eligibility, although this one has the feel of something more permanent. Such is the harsh reality of life in the NFL.
The Texans roster is now at 52 so there's another transaction imminent. Maybe it's promoting Darius Walker from the practice squad or maybe it's something else.
The Texans are now carrying 9 offensive lineman on the roster and appear to be set at that position entering the season.
Stay tuned. Like I said in my previous article, this roster is still a work in progress, but today it took another step closer to being 2008 ready.
Update: Frye was re-signed to the practice squad on September 4 with Gabe Long released to make room.
