Why does today feel like Monday?

Anyway, if you've read anything I've written over the years, you know that I love to read through the quote sheets that are posted daily on houstontexans.com.

Those transcriptions are a valuable resource and a must-read for serious Texans fans because there's so much there that doesn't make it into the mainstream media news articles.

Here's a few items from the post-game and Tuesday pressers that caught my eye:

Coach Kubiak on Steve Slaton:

“He’s really growing up. ... I didn’t run the ball enough in the first half,.... We got a little out of whack play-call wise, and the kid came up to me at halftime, here’s a rookie, grabs me by the shirt to say, ‘I’m OK. Give me the ball.’ He reminds me of (RB Clinton) Portis, personality-wise, that I coached for years. He’s got a great personality. Nothing is too big for him. To watch him get stronger at the end of the game was very impressive.”

Kubiak is comparing Slaton's attitude and personality to Portis.  They are different players with different games, but there's no denying that as Chester Pitts puts it, Slaton "plays bigger" than his 200 lbs. would suggest.  Portis has 20 lbs on Slaton.

Dunta Robinson on the emotions of the team at halftime:

“It was crazy. I’ve never seen anything like it. Guys were so ready to go back out and go back. We had four minutes left and (head coach Gary) Kubiak was like, ‘Guys, calm down; we’re going to go back out on the field,' because everybody was so amped up and ready to go back and play.  We’ve never been in this situation. We’ve never seen this atmosphere and it was a great atmosphere. We feel like we belong here.”

This is the kind of stuff you like to hear.

Eric Winston on the Monday Night Football experience:

“Oh, it’s awesome. You grow up watching Monday Night Football as a kid, and it’s something you can’t really describe. The fans are awesome. The whole red-out and everyone showing up and everyone was screaming and yelling, it really added a lot to the atmosphere.”

Good to hear the positive review on the fans.  We weren't our best but neither were the Texans for a couple of quarters.

Jags running back Fred Taylor on Slaton:

“Initially, I knew nothing about him. Coach (Mike) Tice was telling me his story. He wanted to go to Maryland and they didn’t offer him. He ended up going to West Virginia and all of that stuff. He’s a blazer. I didn’t know he was that fast, but he turned the corner on us a couple of times. I saw what he did in Indy a couple of weeks ago. I think it was a 71-yarder or something. I thought he was just cruising, but tonight he had some afterburners. He’s a good guy, a lot of upside.”

Not bad coming from a guy with nearly 11,000 career rushing yards.  I wasn't aware of the Maryland aspect to his story.

Other news and notes:

By now I'm sure everyone has heard about Bryan Pittman's impending suspension for the rest of the season for using a banned diuretic.  The long snapper is one of those under-appreciated and un-noticed positions on a football team - until he snaps a ball over the punter's head.

The Texans will miss Pittman because he's been 99.9% accurate over the years - and Pittman will undoubtedly miss his paycheck as it's a suspension without pay.  News reports have the Texans promoting TE Clark Harris from the practice squad to fill Pittman's spot.  Here's to Harris having warm hands in Green Bay.

At least we're not Minnesota which lost the Williams Wall for the next four games - that is unless either Williams has a really good lawyer.  Those cheers you hear are from Packers and Bears fans everywhere.

We'll keep watch on the 'Schaub will start in GB' thing.  He needs to get back on the field sometime this year, but again it could be talk to give GB something extra to prepare for.  I didn't think it would happen until Oakland but we'll see.  Kubiak and Head Trainer Kevin Bastin are with him every day and should know when to push that button.
