Ravens linebacker says Texans rookie is dumb

I couldn't find the source but Ravens linebacker Bart Scott somehow came across some comments made by Texans running back Steve Slaton this week about how he was feeling  more confident in the Texans offense.

Scott responded by offering some words of wisdom to the Texans rookie but they weren't all that flattering.  "Young Steve Slaton is a lot more confident about what he’s doing in the offense," said Scott,  "and now we got to worry about him a little bit more because of his confidence.  And he is just dumb enough to think he can run on us."

Well, at least Scott didn't threaten to kill him.

Young Steve Slaton is a lot more confident about what he’s doing in the offense, and now we got to worry about him a little bit more because of his confidence," Scott said. "And he is just dumb enough to think he can run on us --  Bart Scott

Hopefully Scott's shot across the Texans bow is on the bulletin board in the offensive line's meeting room.  If not, I'm disappointed.

But even if it's on the bulletin board it's still going to be an extremely tall order for the Texans o-line to do anything about it.  Based on the performance of the Ravens run defense this season, the running lanes for young Slaton and Ahman Green will be few and far between.

The most rushing yards the Ravens have allowed in a game this season is 73 to Dominic Rhodes a few weeks ago in their loss to the Colts.  What's significant about that number is that those 73 yards were gained on 25 carries.  And one of those carries went for 38 yards - meaning Rhodes gained only 35 yards on the other 24 carries.

But what's important is that the Colts stuck with the run.  And they won.  Big.

That same game plan is essential for the Texans to have a chance in this one and for Sage to walk off the field in one piece.  If Gary loses patience and abandons the running game too early - even if it's only netting 2.8 yards per carry or something like that - it will put Sage's health and the remainder of the Texans season at big-time risk.

The Texans defense will also need to be on their toes in this one.  Joe Flacco is a far better QB than what he was back on Ike Weekend.  Ray Rice led the league with 154 yards rushing last week in Willis McGahee's absence and Derrick Mason led the league with 136 receiving yards.  McGahee has been hampered by an ankle injury.

The Ravens secondary is a little beat up but Samari Rolle is due back.  Chris McAlister may not play and Dawan Landry may be headed for IR.  So just like last week, if the Texans can protect the QB, there may be opportunities downfield.

But then there's always Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs, Haloti Ngata and a host of others to worry about.   This will be a tough one and one that the Texans can ill afford to lose and remain in the conversation of respectable teams.

Extra Points:

  • Ravens with Ties to Texas include Special Assistant to the Head Coach Vic Fangio (former Texans defensive coordinator), WR Mark Clayton (Arlington), T Oniel Cousins (UTEP), and K Matt Stover (Dallas).
  • Ahman Green needs just 30 yards to hit the 9,000 yard rushing mark in his career
  • Chester Pitts and Kris Brown will be playing in their 105th consecutive game. These are the only two players to appear in every Texan game.
