Saint Joseph’s Men’s Cross Country squad won their first A-10 Championship since 2000 on Saturday in St. Louis, Missouri. Coach Mike Glavin was named A-10 Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year as he led the Hawks to what some may consider an unexpected championship.
The Hawks had an outstanding five runners finish in the top-20 during the run at Forest Park with sophomore Kevin McDonnell finishing in second place just behind winner Chris Lemon. Kyle Murray came home fifth, while Jonathan Sclafani finished 15th and Jimmy Jennings finished 16th. Of particular note, Brian Guteri finished 18th despite running with a sore hamstring.
The Hawks finished with 59 points, while Massachusetts, last season’s champion, finished second with 67 points and Dayton was a close third at 70 points. McDonnell, Murray, and Sclafani all received a spot on the All-Conference team.
Meanwhile, The Women’s Cross Country squad finished 7th and had one runner finish in the top-20 with Aimee Chedwiggen running in 16th place. Dayton comfortably won the championship with 72 points, with Charlotte finishing second at 98 points. The Hawks wound up with 184 points in their 7th place finish.
The Hawks Field Hockey team managed the #2 seed in the Atlantic 10 Tournament which is coming up this Friday and Saturday in Amherst, Mass. at Garber Field on the campus of the University of Massachusetts. The Hawks split their slate of games this weekend, with a win over Saint Louis on Sunday after a loss to conference-leader Richmond on Friday.
The Hawks are slated to play at 3 PM on Friday against city rival Temple. In their first meeting, the Hawks took a comfortable 4-0 win in the first conference match for both teams. Richmond and Massachusetts meet in the other Tournament semi-final.
Unfortunately, the Hawks Women’s Soccer team fell to Temple 1-0 on Saturday night. The Hawks had the better of the match, especially in the first half, but failed to turn their superiority into goals. If the Hawks had won, they would have qualified for the conference tournament as La Salle and Richmond each lost both of their games at the weekend. Instead, both of those teams failed to qualify while Massachusetts won both of their games this weekend and were able to sneak in as the 6th seed
