Osteoporosis, the condition wherein bones become fragile and more likely to fracture, had been on the rise and expected to skyrocket in the coming decades with our aging population.
But the New York Times today reports on a new study out of Canada shows that over the past two decades, hip fractures have steadily and dramatically declined. The study observed hospital data. A similar US study several years ago had a similar finding, but the two together add up to fairly solid trend.
Why might this be happening? Some experts wonder if it's a combination of healthier lifelong diets, more awareness about bone health, and older adults being heavier now than in the past. This is the first potential benefit I've heard attributable in part to the obesity epidemic.
