The recent increase in troops and activity in Afghanistan has led to an increased need for our support. With the holidays coming up, there are many ways you can support the troops with some much needed morale-boosting gifts, games and hobby activities.

Earlier this summer, I wrote about supporting our troops with miniature gaming materials. That need still continues, and you can donate miniatures and rulebooks. See this previous article for contact information.

Kobold Quarterly, the RPG magazine published by Wolfgang Bauer, has started an "Adopt-A-Soldier" program where people can donate to help sponsor subscriptions to members of our armed forces. Both soldiers and prospective sponsors can go to this page for more details.

Games for Soldiers and Books for Soldiers collects games and books, respectively, for deployed soldiers. While Games for Soldiers may concentrate on video games, they are open to all types of games. Books for Soldiers can support you sending off RPG books and modules.

Check with your local game store or comic book store. I know that Games Plus in Mt. Prospect does have contact information for organizations that are collecting materials for soldiers. You can also check with your VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) chapter for help as well.

If you are local to a VA Hospital, you might want to call them as well to see if they could use your extra or unwanted books and games - soldiers recovering from their wounds have lots of downtime and could use your donations.

There are also many other organizations and websites set up for collecting and forwarding materials to needy or deployed soldiers. Just be sure that the organization is legit, it doesn't hurt to make a phone call and investigate if you're not sure.
