Hillary is my sister who is an indoor cat. She lives in Wheat Ridge, CO, is micro-chipped and wears a collar. She says, "It is my ticket home."  Cats living in Jefferson County are not required to be licensed.

Just fifteen days remain to Chip Your Cat. How much: Free. Why do it; because you love them. When: the offer ends September 30, 2009. Where: animal shelters, vet offices metro-wide. See location list at the end of this article.

Every Doggone Green Crusader and environmentally-conscious pet parent ought to see to it that their cat and dog has a voice; a collar, a microchip, tag and a license. Most counties now mandate a license for pet citizenship. Take the opportunity and green your pet? Cedar wrote about this program in July. So, you’ve let it go. It’s not too late.

Biggest reasons why people don’t do get this done.

It costs too much. Between now and the end of the month it’s FREE. You may want to take care of this now as it may soon become required.

I don’t see the need, after all my cat lives “indoors”. Cats are sneaky and they can get out when you least expect it.

Some pet parents fear the technology. The procedure is simple, routine, and painless, and it doesn't require anesthesia. Your pet simply gets an injection under the loose skin between the shoulder blades; it's alot like getting vaccinated, the chip is roughly the size of a grain of rice. They have an ID which can reunite you and her for a lifetime.

My cat already wears a collar and a tag. Fact is a collar or tag can get caught on anything and fall off. Less than 10 percent of lost cats brought to shelters are reunited with their families.

How many people have chipped their cat in the Denver Metro area since this program began? Roughly 18,000. Thousands more still need the identification, the goal is 150,000 cats.

• A survey of members of the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association found that 75-90% of dog parents provide some sort of ID for their dogs while only 20-40% of cats have ID.
In a perfect world, leashes, fences, and doors should be adequate to keep your pet safe at home. However, in the real world, accidents happen. Your pet depends on you to keep her safe from harm. Just do this; the benefit is enormous.
