Society has long been ruled by a worldview that makes sense of life by assuming powerful men must govern us. This view is obsolete.
Don’t confuse society and government. They are not only different, but they have different origins.
Society is produced by our wants, and government by our wickedness. Society promotes happiness by uniting our talents while government merely curbs our vices. “Society in every state is a blessing,” Thomas Paine wrote in Common Sense, ” but government even in its best state is but a necessary evil, in its worst state an intolerable one.”
In seeing the difference between society and government, we see the difference between freedom and tyranny.
I believe civilization is the story of humanity learning to accept full responsibility for free will. If we’d manage our lives more sensibly, we’d need no high government to control our lowest impulses. If each of us heeded our conscience and reason, we would barely need any government at all.
That’s not our current reality.
Today’s reality is a world filled with hate, violence and suffering. Why?
Society reflects the web of “mass consciousness” we weave daily by what we think, feel, say and do. Our daily actions impact ourselves, our families, workplaces, communities, nations, and planetary ecosystems.
Our harmful habits are reflected in our society while our society reinforces those harmful habits in us. It’s a vicious circle.
To break the cycle, we need to raise our consciousness. We need to change how we view the world and how we view ourselves within the world. Happily, such a quantum shift in humanity is happening now.
In today’s era of globalization, two specters haunt our world — the spirits of genuine democracy and absolute tyranny. We live in the broad spectrum between.
On one side is a grassroots drive for open democracy through a spiritual awareness of our global oneness. On the other side are corporations and religions ruling us through puppet governments controlling our minds and our lives through our addiction to authority.
Which way goes society and government depends on which way goes each one of us. Our daily choices decide the fate of life on earth.
Once we see global connectivity or “synergy” as a fact of life, like dawn follows night, we accept personal and social responsibility for how our personalities shape society and government. Seeing our links with all life inspires us to live more respectfully and harmoniously with others.
When we practice mindful self rule, we no longer need masters to govern us.
