Cats are active predators like a lion and the tiger. If you decide to keep your cat indoors you must provide plenty of mental stimulation as if the cat were out in the wild. Making the choice to have an indoor cat can be a smart choice if you live nearby a busy street or if you are afraid your cat might get lost outdoors.

If you decide to let your cat be an outdoor cat please consider the following tips.

1: You can choose a collar that has a breakaway mechanism that will come off if your cat gets caught on something.

2: Microchip your cat or put ID tags on the cat collar.

3: Have your cat vaccinated.

4: Do not declaw an outdoor cat because the claws are natural defense for cats.

Please do not ever put a bell on a cats collar. You may think it's cute for little kitty to run around the house with a bell around its neck but this sort of cruelty should just be common sense for people to not do. How would you feel with a bell tied around your neck all day and every time you shook or moved a bell went off? Cats that have bells around their necks candidates for high anxiety and mental breakdowns. If you see someone else who's cat has a bell around the collar do the responsible thing and remove it, of course with the owner's permission. Hopefully the cat won't be too far gone by the time the bell is removed and need lifetime cat psychotherapy.

Let your cat out early in the morning so she has time to explore outdoors and be home before dark.

Feed your cat before letting it outdoors. When your cat returns feed it again as a reward for coming home.

Let your cat walk out of your house on its own so it can distribute its own scent on the ground. A cat has sent glands between its paws and this scent will make it easier for your cat to find its way home.

Keep other pets such as dogs indoors when you let your cat out for the first time or first few times. If the dog chases the It might cause a cat to fear coming home.
