Breckenridge, a ski town in Colorado, voted to legalize Marijuana (see full story here). The proposal passed would allow adults 21 and older to have up to 1 ounce of marijuana. The last estimates before results came out showed the proposal would win with about a 72 percent vote.
The community supported this measure because it wanted local law-enforcement to stop busting harmless marijuana users. However, although the city has taken the position as a Maverick, the state still criminalizes marijuana in the absence of a medical clearance.
Voters intended to send a message to local law enforcement. With the new law, local law enforcement would have to take offenders to the county sheriff's department to be cited under state law.
Ultimately, it is unfortunate that an entire town cannot decide for themselves what should or should not be allowed within their borders.
