It’s not just the number of resorts, and the number of owners that earns Marriott Vacation Club the designation, in my opinion, as the best in the industry. The diversity of product, the innovation, and the commitment they show to each segment adds to their reputation.

Today, like many other businesses, more and more of the product are in fewer and fewer hands.
More and more, independent developers are fading away, getting purchased by the conglomerates, certainly in terms of traditional timeshare. Some of the larger independents include Shell Vacations Club, Bluegreen Resorts, ILX Resorts and Westgate Resorts. Smaller developers are to be found in the relatively young field of fractionals and Private Residence Clubs.
Traditional hospitality companies in timeshare (and many are also in fractionals) include Sheraton’s parent company, Starwood, Disney, Hilton, Hyatt, Four Seasons and others have a prominent and growing role.
But none, in my subjective opinion, approach the position that Marriott has earned.
Their flagship Marriott Vacation club has resorts from coast to coast (Hawaii has coasts, doesn’t it? I mean, c’mon it’s a bunch of islands). I have found them to be feature-filled, well laid out, with innovative floor plans. The knock on them, if any, is they are not inexpensive. It should be pointed out, however, they tend to hold considerable value on the resale market. They are also located in high demand vacation spots around the world.

But Marriott doesn’t stop there. For product serving those closer to the entry-level of the timeshare market they have Horizons by Marriott Vacation Club, currently with locations in Florida and Branson, MO. Although the price point is considerably lower, there is little to no compromise on quality or features at the family-friendly properties. The units are smaller, squeezing two bedrooms into the space of a one bedroom at flagship MVCI properties, and certainly, a lower cost level of accessories. They don’t skimp in the public areas either; their Orlando property, for instance, provided free popcorn in the lobby. The walk-in zero depth entry swimming pool has a fun pirate ship theme.
So, Marriott covers the mainstream, and entry-level timeshare markets. But, as you might expect, they are also represented in the high end, as well as the fractional market.
