The best timeshare resort in San Francisco.
The best timeshare resort in San Francisco.
It’s not as easy a question to answer as you might think. Here’s the conundrum. Are we looking for the best timeshare at which to stay when you are visiting San Francisco? The best timeshare to own if you live in San Francisco? What are the geographic boundaries – Tahoe? Carmel? Do we include fractionals?
What about price points. The Bentley may be one of the best automobiles, but it’s also out of reach for most drivers

For today’s column, we’re going to focus on more mainstream programs – that lets’ out the St. Regis on 3rd; Odeon Penthouse on Powell, and the Ritz Carlton Club and Residence, which will be celebrating it's first anniversary this November.
Then I realized – there is no one best timeshare for everyone, and I can feature several of them in stories over the next few weeks. But today I’m going to write about what I feel is the best overall timeshare program to own for people living in the Bay Area.

Historically, San Francisco was one of the first cities to have timeshare within the actual borders, and not a nearby suburb. There are a number of properties here, and the number is growing every year.
WorldMark by Wyndham (formerly TrendWest) is on Bush and Stockton; San Francisco Suites and The Nob Hill Inn are both on Pine Street. The venerable Fairmont Hotel has branched into vacation ownership, opening Fairmont Heritage Place in Ghirardelli Square.
A unique characteristic of urban timeshare in general, and San Francisco resorts in particular is the way the properties are used, and who it is using them. Many of the people owning the resorts in San Francisco actually live less than one hundred miles from the City, often even closer.
Instead of staying for a week, many owners use the properties for a night or two at a time. They may have a conference in town, or they may have tickets to a play or ballet.
But timeshare is still often used for exchange, and San Francisco being one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world, becomes a prime exchange in both RCI and Interval International. As a matter of fact, Mel Grant seized on that concept more than ten years ago when he founded San Francisco Exchange (SFX) built on the popularity of resorts in top tier locations.
By now the attentive reader, by noting the resorts I’ve not yet mentioned, have probably figured out the timeshare program I consider the best all-purpose ownership in San Francisco. Many of you may disagree with me, and that’s okay, but in my opinion, the Illinois-based Shell Vacation Club, founded by Sheldon Ginsburg hits on almost the key features to meet the criteria as best timeshare program in San Francisco.
They operate several locations in town, The Donatello on Post Street; the Inn at the Opera on Fulton between Franklin and Gough , and the Suites at Fisherman’s Wharf on Hyde.
The points-based program also has properties in Arizona, Mexico, Hawaii and more.
They have also just opened the Vino Bello Resort in Napa, which will have both regional and international demand.
Points combined with multiple locations in the City offers very flexible usage opportunities, whether it’s short stays, larger accommodations, or longer trips. Efficient points management can also make the program affordable for many budgets.
Whether you live here or are planning to visit San Francisco, Shell Vacation Club resorts will serve you well however it is that you would be using timeshare.
