In a recent meeting of the Lower Moyamensing Civic Association, Arnold Arr, a guest speaker from the Census Bureau gave an overview of why it is important to participate in the census.
It is no secret that there has been a population decline in Philadelphia. However, he said that the city’s population is also difficult to count. That could lead to a lower count, which means a lower representation.
“Less people means less representation. Less people means less money,” he said.
“Your neighborhood is well-defined,” he said, speaking of South Philly. That fact can be used for initiatives related to population size. However, he emphasized the importance of participating in the census.
“If you're not counted, you're lost,” he said. So be sure to fill out those census forms.
