I’m a big proponent of the, ‘wait and see’ mentality. Well, I’ve waited, I’ve seen and what I’m seeing from the Titans is troubling. Not fatal, not disastrous, not earth shattering. Just troubling.
But Titans fans, we’ve seen this before, we’ve been down this road.
In 2003, the Titans went 12-4 and finished first in the AFC South before losing the divisional playoff game to the eventual Super Bowl champion Patriots. Coached by the same Jeff Fisher and the same Mike Heimerdinger who are now spearheading the Titans current efforts.
The Titans then disappeared into NFL oblivion the following two seasons. In ’04 the team went 5-11 finishing last in the AFC South. They did even worse in ’05 finishing 4-12. Arguably these were the two worst seasons the club has seen since moving to Tennessee.
Tell me you’re seeing a pattern here. Last season’s 13-3 record, loss in the divisional playoffs and now, they’re falling into the abyss.
I’m not going to try and breakdown the problems – but I will try to rationalize the situation from 10,000 feet.
If the Titans are unable to correct the problems that are plaguing the offensive production and the defensive efforts then it becomes less about blame and finger pointing and more about fixing what’s broken, tinkering until they get it right.
Remember what happened last time around? They got rid of fan favorites Derek Mason, Kevin Carter and Drew Bennett, shipped out Javon Kearse and then, a couple years later locked Steve McNair out of the facility.
But the eventual result was favorable and the team began to win again.
It all started with VY getting benched then Albert Haynesworth signing with Washington…do you see where I’m going with this?
It’s all cyclical folks and it’s likely to get worse before it gets better. This season is going to be a long one, but like I’ve said before – don’t panic. Don’t call for the firing of Fisher or Heimerdinger or Chuck Cecil…that’s rash and reactionary.
But don’t expect that they will turn it around this season either. It’s going to be a long haul and it’s going to take work and changes.
Accept that this season is going to be rocky, trust the club’s management and ownership – they’re the pros, the experts.
And always remember, it could be worse. You could be a Browns fan.
